Course Description

The PALS Provider Course aims to improve outcomes for pediatric patients by preparing healthcare providers to effectively recognize and intervene in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest by using high‐performance team dynamics and high‐quality individual skills. The course includes a series of case scenario practices with simulations that reinforce important concepts. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the multiple-choice exam.

Course Outline

Perform high‐quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) per American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support (BLS) recommendations; Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention; Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within 10 seconds; Apply team dynamics; Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure; Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure; Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock; Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock; Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias; Describe clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias; Implement post–cardiac arrest management

Learner Outcomes

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course aims to improve survival and recovery outcomes for critically ill or injured infants and children. After completing the PALS course, students will be able to perform these key actions: 1) High-Quality CPR: Perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation following basic life support (BLS) guidelines. 2) Early Recognition: Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and start CPR within 10 seconds. 3) Patient Evaluation: Differentiate between patients who need immediate intervention and those who do not. 4) Respiratory Management: Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure, and perform early interventions. 5) Shock Management: Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock, and perform early treatment interventions. 6) Arrhythmia Management: Differentiate between stable and unstable patients with arrhythmias and describe the clinical signs of instability. 7) Post-Cardiac Care: Implement effective post-cardiac arrest management. 8) Team Dynamics: Apply high-performance team dynamics and clear communication as an effective team leader or member.
